The first day we took the subway downtown to the World Trade Center site with a quick stop at Grand Central Station. From the World Trade Center we walked north shopping on Canal street, and checking out the stores and cafes in SoHo, and Greenwich. From Greenwich we caught the subway to Times Square, where we had an early dinner at Bubba Gumps. We then took the subway back to our hotel in midtown, changed clothes, and used the subway to go back to 42nd Street to see Monty Python’s Spamalot. The play was a riot. It's all the best scenes from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
While in downtown I stopped at a small but very nice yarn shop in SoHo called Purl (137 Sullivan), and a wonderful yarn shop with a coffee and tea shop in Greenwich called The Point (37a Bedford). Having yarn, tea, and bake goods all in the same place is fabulous.
The next day we checked out the stores on 5th Ave., ate lunch at Saks Fifth Avenue, visited Rockefeller Center, and caught the subway so I could shop at School Products (1201 Broadway #301) and Habu (135 W. 29th). That evening we ate at Maxies and saw Doubt. This play was truly wonderful. I’m not a big fan of movies or plays where you leave feeling bad or disturbed. I was concerned that this play would effect me that way. But it didn’t. It was thought provoking but not depressing. Truly a wonderful play.
- To get into School Products, go to the 3rd floor and ring the buzzer. School Products carries a huge selection of Karabella yarn and many other yarns. This is a wonderful store. If you can only do a few stores, don’t miss this one.
- Habu is close to School Product but is a bit trickery to find. There is a closed store with the address of 135 W. 29th. To the right of this store there is a small doorway. When you enter it, there a guard sitting there and a list of tenants on a board behind him. This is ALSO 135 W. 29th (go figure!). He took one look at me and said Habu? I said yes and he said 8th floor.
On our last full day, we took the subway to 77th and then walked up Madison to a yarn shop called String (1015 Madison Ave.). I loved this shop. We then walked across Central Park to Tavern on the Green and ate lunch. The food was wonderful and the interior is amazing.
After lunch we took a horse drawn carriage tour of Central Park.
We then walked back to our hotel, which took us along 5th Ave again, caught the subway to Times Square, ate at Hard Rock, and saw Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This is a very funny play. Nobert Leo Butz is a scream.
I purchased the Karabella Aurora 8 yarn at School Products. It is a wonderful eggplant color. The Koigu and Classic Elite Embrace (100% cashmere) I bought at String.
